Using More Than One Inquiry Group

One Inquiry search can use up to 26 groups of criteria. Each group of criteria is placed into a letter group (e.g., group A, group B, ... group Z). You must make at least one entry in any given group before the next group can be added (e.g., group A must have at least one criterion before any criteria can be added to group B).

The Inquiry search will contain students who satisfy all of the criteria in any of the groups. Criteria within a group could be considered as ‘and’ variables; and Groups within the list could be considered as ‘or’ variables. For example, group A has 2 criteria (A1, A2) and group B has 3 criteria (B1, B2, B3). If the student meets criteria (A1 and A2) or (B1 and B2 and B3), the student is included in the list.

To add another group to the list, click on the "Empty" tab and then click the Add button.

Example

To find out how many students left any school this year in grades 9 to 10, 11 to 12, and 13, you will need to use three groups: A, B, and C.

Note: To add groups B and C and their respective criteria, use the same process as explained below for group A.

Grade = 9 and over

and

Grade = 10 and under

and

Retirement/Transfer date = 95/09/01 and later, (that is if 95/09/01 is the first day of school).

Create a new list, then add these criteria. From the Criterion Selection Tree, choose Personal, Biographics, and then Grade. At this point, a box will appear. Scroll through the list of grades and select 9. Next, click on Selected Grade and Over from the Include students in box. Finally, select This Year from the Year box.

Add the next criterion to group A by clicking the Add button. From the Criteria Tree, choose Personal, then Biographics, then Grade. A box will appear. Scroll through the list of grades and select 10. Next, click on Selected Grade and Under from the Include students in box. Finally, select This Year from the Year box.

Add the final criterion to group A, by clicking the Add button. From the Criterion Selection Tree, Choose Enrolment, then Entry/Retirement, then Retirement/transfer date. A box will appear. Type the Retirement/transfer date: 95/09/01. In the Include students click Selected entry date and Later.

Grade = 12 and under

and

Retirement/transfer date = 95/09/01 and later.

C

Grade = 13

Retirement/transfer date = 95/09/01 or later.

From the Include Students Registered frame, select the students that you want to include. Since the Inquiry search will look for students who have left your school on 95/09/01 or later, include the students with Deleted enrolment status. Select the schools that you want and then compile the list.

Hint: Before you click the Students or Close button, write down the number totals for each group, or do a screen print-out or capture to Window’s clipboard by pressing the print screen key. The compiled list contains an alphabetical list of students who meet all criteria in any of the groups; students are not categorized into groups A, B, and C. But they will be categorized by school of the list is compiled of more than one school.
